Confrontations over race have become common in a predominantly white suburban America. Many of its residents are divided over whether bigotry is prevalent in their towns, and few examples have illustrated better the point than the controversy surrounding a Black Lives Matter sign erupted in front of a hair salon in a Boston suburb.
